Pedro Aznar

1959
Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, July 23.

1961
Discovers (and puts at risk several times) a fascinating machine called "record player". Some say he used to spend hours just watching the records spin.

1964
Falls in love with colored vinyl record collection at Kindergarten.

1966
Gets The Beatles' Revolver. Music becomes a hunger of the soul.

1968
Starts studying classical guitar with Elba Vignaldo. She teaches him using a notation system called Klavarskribo [http://www.klavarskribo.nl/oud/english/].

1969
Discovers the melodica, a small portable instrument on which he learns the layout of the keyboard, not having a piano at home.

1971/1973
Puts together a garage band named "Life". All of the members were friends of his, who he taught to play. He plays lead guitar. Gets his first electric guitar, a yellow SG model.

1974/1976
Joins the underground group "Madre Atómica". Switches to bass. His father, a violinist, gets him a $100 instrument, which Pedro keeps to this day. The other two members of the group are Mono Fontana on drums and Lito Epumer on guitar. The guitar trio setting is the ideal ground for developing a melodic style on bass which would become his personal mark in the following years.
Studies drums with Mono Fontana. Makes his first professional recording as drummer and synthesizer player with Celeste Carballo.

1977
Joins the group Alas, with Gustavo Moretto on keyboards and trumpet and Carlos Riganti on drums. This group was one of the pioneers of the use of folklore and tango fused with rock and jazz.
Continues his guitar studies with Irma Constanzo.
Hears Jaco Pastorius [www.jacopastorius.com] and finds in the sound of the fretless bass the perfect voice for the melodic style he'd been developing. That same night, takes off the last 4 frets on the $100 bass (he had a Fender, by now, that he wouldn't have dared touch), checks the sound, falls on his back and goes on with the job, armed only with a set of pliers and a screwdriver.

1978
Alas breaks up after recording "Pinta tu aldea", released only in 1983.
Records "Volando de vida" with Raúl Porchetto.
Plays with several jazz groups, experimenting with the fretless bass. He gets a call saying Charly García was in Brazil putting together a group and needed a bass player, and that he had been recommended for the job. He agrees to meet him, and Charly travels to Buenos Aires to see Pedro at a jazz club. There he invites him to join what would become "Serú Girán".
He flies to São Paulo, Brazil, along with Moro, the drummer, and there they get together with Charly and David Lebón (guitar player and singer). They start rehearsals immediately and record their first album at Eldorado Studios.
It was the time of a murderous dictatorship in Argentina, covered up with the mindless euphoria of the Soccer World Cup, and the group would become a voice of resistance and beauty amidst the horror.

1979
Serú Girán was received coldly, at first, by a public that seemed to resent the idea of the group having started abroad. They released a second album this year, "La grasa de las capitales", that started to slowly change that.
Pedro buys his first piano. Starts studying jazz harmony and arrangement with Juan Carlos Cirigliano and classical piano with Pichona Etlis.
Records "Nayla" with David Lebón.
Gets a four-track open reel recorder and a six channel mixer, to deepen his recording experiments started two years earlier bouncing tracks between two cassette decks.

1980
This year marked Serú Girán's success. They started to tour non-stop to sold out audiences, launched their own record label and their shows started setting new standards in every aspect. The "Bicicleta" album and tour were examples of this, as well as the free concert for 60,000 people they played at Sociedad Rural. Pedro bought a set of synthesizers that made his influence on the sound and arrangements of Serú Girán's music much more present. He also expanded his home studio to 8 tracks (his songs on the group's albums from now on and his first solo album will all be recorded at home with this equipment).
He is invited by Luis Alberto Spinetta to play as a guest with his newly formed group, Jade.
Serú Girán gets invited to play at the Rio Monterey Jazz Festival in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. They were allocated a short spot in the afternoon, originally, but when the organizers heard them, they got invited to play again at night. There, Pedro heard the Pat Metheny Group live for the first time, and was so impressed that he went backstage afterwards and gave Pat a tape of his home recordings as a way of giving something back for the beauty of their music.

1981
Serú Girán records "Peperina" at the peak of their popularity; Pedro starts putting together his first solo album and considering a trip to the United States to study at the Berklee College of Music. He receives a call from a guy saying Pat Metheny had loved his tape and wanted to get in touch with him. Pedro calls Pat, after having thought it was a joke, to discover it wasn't. They agree to get together when Pedro went to Boston.
Composes and records, with Spinetta, the music for the play "Lenny Blues" by Robertino Granados.

Serú Girán decide they need to take a break from their hectic schedule; Pedro announces he will then take advantage of it to continue his studies in Boston.

1982

Back in Boston, he gets together with Pat several times at rehearsals and concerts. Nearing year's end, Pedro invites him, Lyle Mays and Danny Gottlieb to record two songs of his for his "Contemplación" album. There was an atmosphere of excitement during the session, and a couple of days later, right after Pedro's arrival back in Buenos Aires, Pat calls to offer him to join the group.

1983
