AGUA Y VINO
(Agua e vinho)
(Water and Wine)
Egberto Gismonti-Geraldo Carneiro
Every day she’d trudge
through the orchard under the sun
The dead hour, dead stone,
agony and oranges in the sun
Life went between that fence and the walls of silence
and the dogs guarding her dreams
didn’t sleep,
saw whitewash shadows
in the shadows in the garden
The dead moon, dead night
cold wind and a rosary by the gate
And a makeshift, yellow fire
consumed her heart
And she began searching among the bonfires, slowly,
And her heart no longer feared the flames
of hell and endless darkness
Love would finally come
